kojodesigns

confessions of a pretty fabric hoarder

March 1, 2011

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

There are few things I love more than a streamlined, well organized house. I also take great joy in the destashing process- I love clearing out things we don’t use or don’t need anymore (my husband thinks I’m a bit too liberal in my destashing, but I like to think I’m just being thorough).

However, when it comes to craft supplies, I lose all of my ruthless anti-hoarding tendencies. I love to save my favorite pretty fabrics, trims, papers (even wrapping paper!). I always think, “But what if I use it and then come up with the perfect project for it later?” Which, of course, is just silly. What good is a shelf full of beautiful fabric or a closet full of fabulous wrapping paper?

That being said, in honor of the dawning of March (good riddance, February), in the grand tradition of Spring Cleaning, and in the hopes of reversing our craft-supply-hoarding tendencies, we are using the next couple weeks to use up and clear out! Yep, it’s Spring DeStash time, kojo style!
Not only will we have ideas and tutorials for using up some commonly stashed items like t-shirts, pretty fabric, onesies (do any of you compulsively buy plain onesies and kids shirts with the grand intention of customizing them like we do?)…

…we also have guest tutorials (Kalleen, Mandy, Angie, Heidi, Katie, Gwen, Tiffany)…

…and giveaways lined up (so you can restock your soon-to-be-depleted supplies with gorgeous fabric and wool felt!).

Get ready to Destash your stash, friends!

LOVE this idea!! My sewing room is looking dangerously close to a room on that show "Hoarding, Buried Alive"! And I always think the same thing you do – "what if I come up with the perfect project for that?"

Oh do I ever know what you mean!! Okay so my house is far from clutter-free and streamlined but we are trying… ha ha! Or maybe I should say it is trying me! 🙂

But when it comes to fabric I just can't rid of it and I've not sewed anything in over 6 months. And yet I am looking for onesies (no children under the age of 11 here!!) to make cute little dresses for all the baby girls born in the last year… (i am sooooo LATE with the baby gifts!!)

Where do you get your onesies? Our thrift store has them for $1.99… I mean plleeeaaaaaassssssssse this are USED folks… a BUCK NINETY NINE??? I don't think so! (and they aren't even that cute..) I'm looking to make one of your t-shirt dresses for a one year old who wears dresses mostly. What do you think about as a toddler dress? Trust me I need to make like 6 dresses for girls between the ages of 6wks to 6 yrs…. MUST be simple!

Keep up the great work and I can't wait to see your ideas!

can't wait to find some great things to do with my "stash". I really want to do some quilts, but the need to be easy and fun. However, I think I am open to nearly anything that will help.

That sounds like such a fun series … can't wait to see the ideas. I've been trying to sew through my stash and buy very little new fabric unless I have a super-specific project in mind.

What a great idea! I'm terrible at buying things and not using them, because they look to cute and it must be the right project! I've even got a roll of favourite Christmas paper which I wont use as no present seems worthy! I think i may need help! Looking forward to some fab ideas to help destash!

Have you seen Stitched In Color's bottled rainbow's stash-buster project? The picture of your scraps in jars reminded me of it… you should check it out!

This is me EXACTLY! I used to get rid of everything, but now I am always wondering what I could do with my daughters adorable torn rainbow leggings…….. or that great shirt of mine that accidentally got washed with a pair of jeans. Thanks to the craft blogs, i see the potential in every scrap of fabric!
