blue dress sew along- day 2

Ready for Day 2 of our Blue Dress Sew Along? Here we go, friends.

After cutting all of your fabric yesterday, we’re ready to sew today. Make darts on the front of one of your fabric rectangles. To do so, use a fabric marker to make a dot 4.5″ down from the top of your fabric on each side.

Then draw a triangle with a 1.5″ base and 4.5″ sides, with the point of the triangle on the interior and the opening/base of the triangle on the edge. Match up the lines of your triangle. Pin and sew in place. *This means that the darts go about 4.5″ in.

After you make darts, sew your front and back rectangles together, right sides facing each other. You should be back to one large rectangle of fabric. The front should have darts and the back shouldn’t. Finish off the seam where you sewed the two pieces together with a serger, an overcasting stitch or pinking shears.

*Your front side (the side with the darts) will be a little shorter than the back side. It’s no problem (we’ll make up for the difference when we hem), but make sure your top edge is lined up exactly and that the fabric difference ends up at the bottom.

How far in are the darts? Any darts in the lining?

I love the way you're breaking this tutorial up into segments. Genius!

I'm confused – After you sew the darts, isn't the front rectangle shorter in length on the sides than the back rectangle? When you sew the front to the back, is the extra length from the back on the top or the bottom of the dress?

Hey all! So glad you're joining us!

First, the darts are 4.5" down from the top of the fabric. Also, they go about 4" in.

Also, the darts shorten the front a little (the difference is almost negligible). You make up the difference when you hem, so match up the top and let the not matched up edge be the bottom.

Thanks for asking questions and helping me make this better!
