how to make a custom embroidered onesie

embroidery 101- how to hand embroider a onesie

how to make a custom name onesIf you’ve been around the kojo blog for a lo-ong time (and by long time, I pretty much mean since the beginning in 2008), you might remember the custom embroidered onesies that we used to sell in our etsy shop.

Well, in the years since then, the blog part of kojo has become the main part of kojo and our etsy shop is empty of all tangible products (there are party printables in there, but that’s it).

how to make a custom embroidered onesieHowever, helping my brother and sister-in-law welcome Sweet Miss Josie Cope into the world a couple weeks ago made me just sure that another embroidered onesie for my newest niece was necessary. A dire need, really.

And as I sat down to make the teensiest onesie read “Josie,” I figured that you might want to know how to make one of these as well. They’re super easy, though a bit time consuming. But they make such a great gift that they’re worth the effort.

how to make a custom embroidered onesieStart with a plain onesie (I used a NB sized one since Miss Josie hasn’t even broken the 6 lb mark yet).

how to make a custom embroidered onesieWith a fabric marker, trace the name/phrase you’re wanting to embroider onto the onesie (I just held the onesie up to the computer, but you could also print out the name and trace that as well).

how to make a custom embroidered onesieCut out a rectangle of interfacing, about the width of the onesie and a couple inches tall. Flip the onesie inside out and pin the interfacing on the inside of the onesie directly behind your name lettering.

how to make a custom embroidered onesieEmbroider on top of your tracing (I’ve been meaning to put together a simple embroidery primer- watch for that).

how to make a custom embroidered onesieTie off you embroidery and trim the excess interfacing down until it’s just an outline of the name.

DIY custom embroidered onesie (the perfect gift for a baby shower!)Turn the onesie inside out and deliver to your sweet niece, or your kids’ teacher (or whoever your recipient may be). Such sweetness!

sad day

Because of our grandpa’s worsening health (he is still in really rough shape- thank you so much for all of the emails, comments, checking in and prayers!), BOTH of my sisters were in Denver last week. Since both Kedron and Jordan’s trips were unplanned and super last minute, we didn’t have anything on the calendar […]

hyatti: good for the heart.

This trip home has been so good and so hard. Kirst explained it perfectly. It has been SO good to spend time with family: Hearing Evie say”papa!”, feeling my sister-in-law’s baby move for the first time, chatting (and chatting and chatting) with my mama and sister, laughing with my brother, cooking with my dad. […]

hyatti: birthday girl

My middle daughter turned four this week. Four! For her birthday she wanted- a cake from the grocery store, “clunky” shoes, and a puppy. We definitely came through on two out of three and I think we made up for not getting her a puppy by throwing a puppy party, which I will share with […]

happy mother’s day (and the inside track on kirstin, according to burke)

Happy Mother’s Day, friends (printable courtesy of the lovely ladies at 1825)! I thought it might be fun to interview Burke for Mother’s Day- I spend more hours with Burke and Piper Jane than anyone else, so I thought he’d have some good “Kirstin inside track” for you. Here are his (funny!) answers- Q- Burke, […]
