detox water recipes by kojo-designsQuick confession- I am the world’s worst water drinker. I’m terrible. I live in Denver, where it’s dry and a mile high, and I know that it’d be better if I would hydrate my body. But still I don’t.

detox water recipes at kojodesignsHowever, when my sister showed me these detox water recipes, I was excited to try them. And, friends, cucumber lemon mint water might make a water drinker out of me. Plus, they’re supposed to be great for flushing toxins from your system- bonus, right?

Want to make some too?

CUCUMBER LEMON MINT DETOX WATER (idea found here)

cucumber lemon mint detox water recipeAdd one sliced cucumber, half of a lemon, sliced, and several sprigs of mint to a liter jar (we used a large mason jar). Fill with water and let steep over night. Enjoy.

STRAWBERRY ROSEMARY DETOX WATER (modified from this recipe)

strawberry rosemary detox waterAdd one package of thinly sliced strawberries and several sprigs of rosemary to a liter jar or pitcher (you might also add a few halved blueberries or blackberries to give this one a little more flavor). Fill with water and let steep overnight.

APPLE CINNAMON DETOX WATER (from this recipe)

apple cinnamon detox waterAdd two and a half thinly sliced green apples and four large cinnamon sticks to a liter jar or pitcher. Fill with water and let steep overnight.

detox water recipes by kojodesignsWe made all three of these over the last few days and I think I drank my whole ‘eight glasses’ water quota today. If the only benefit of these detox waters is that I stay hydrated when I have them around, that’s good enough for this slowly-reforming-world’s-worst-water-drinker.

Have you ever tried making detox water? Or do you have any other stay-hydrated tips for me?

  1. looks yummy. my husband and i still talk about the water we drank at our hotel on our hawiian honeymoon! it had a ton of citrus floating in it and was so refreshing.

random question, what’s the name of the font you used on the pictures? i love it!

    1. hey dayna- what kind of citrus? maybe we could recreate?
and the font on all of the specific pics is ‘blanch.’ I will look up the other one (jord made that one). 🙂
hope your day is going great, friend! 🙂

      1. thank you! i am adding that to the list of fonts i want to download.

i talked to geoff, and we both remember lots of lime, lemon, orange & grapefruit slices. i am sure it would be easy to recreate. it was also super cold (there was a tube of ice in the middle) which i loved.

  2. Kirstin this is awesome, I have the same problem than you about water, Can’t drink it and since I move (from a beach to this dry city) to Calgary my skin feels like cardboard literally. And I’m breastfeeding so I will try your recipes right now.

      1. Thanks Carolina. And I totally feel your dry-city, not-enough-water pain. 🙂 If you are like me, the extra flavor in the water is enough to push me over the edge and help me actually drink some! Fingers crossed it works for you too! 🙂

        1. Love these recipes! I am definitely not a water drinker either, but these will turn me! Just tried the cucumber, lemon, and mint recipe, but after steeping overnight, the mint leaves are already brown. Still okay to drink?

          1. Taylor, does it taste ok? I usually sift out the mint and still drink it, but it depends on how long the mint was brown (which I am assuming you don’t know)! Sometimes the citrus peel makes the water too strong as well- just experiment until you find the mix you love! 🙂

  3. I’m a horrible water drinker too! I’m trying to get better at that, and sometimes use those little packets you dump into a small bottle of water, but I don’t think those are that great for you, so I would love to try some of these recipes!! I like that they’re all natural, and look really tasty too. Thanks 🙂

    1. Rachel, totally with you (obviously- haha). My SIL loves those water packets… I haven’t ever tried them, but I think they might work for me. Though, I am kind of in love with the cucumber/lemon/mint- maybe it’ll stick. 🙂

  4. These look so yummy!! I actually love to drink water, although now I am constantly drinking hot tea b/c I’m freezing, and it is such a dehydrator. These look perfect for the summer! I always hate that those “flavored water” drinks have fake sugar added to them, this looks like a yummy substitute.

    1. I love tea too, Erin… though, not water (obviously- haha). 🙂
If I lived in the UK, I would drink tea exclusively I think. 🙂

  5. Check out Hint Water…same idea as this…but available in stores for when you aren’t around fresh fruit to put in your water. 10 flavors available and 4 in their carbonated version!

  6. My husband and I stayed at the Four Seasons in Vancouver and at their pool had lots of flavoured water. My fav was cucumber and lemon grass, delicious. I too am guilty of under hydrating myself, going to change that though 🙂

  7. Just made some of my own cucumber, lemon, mint water- buy also added half of a white grapefruit! In the fridge now but can’t wait till tomorrow to try it!

  8. I have been drinking water with lemon/basil/mint and I loooove! Whats your favorite? I’m a little skeptical on the strawberry/rosemary but may do grapefruit instead. Great finds 🙂

    1. Ashley, I love the addition of basil- great idea. And the strawberry flavor doesn’t come through much- I was just thinking yesterday that grapefruit basil would be a good combo! 🙂

    1. Hmm, MaKayla, I think I’d stick with the cinnamon sticks, at least for the overnight portion. You might be able to just do it with apples and add a little ground cinnamon right before you drink it though? Let me know how it goes if you try it…

  9. I have a couple of questions. How much do you make at a time? How long does it stay good in the fridge? Can I make a couple days worth at a time or should I just make one days worth and leave it in there over night? One more, when you pour it into your glass to drink it do you put any of the fruit in your glass or just the water? I saw one website that said to take the fruit out and discard it before drinking.

    1. Hey Gina- love all of the questions. I make one pitcher at a time and try to drink it over a day or two (otherwise it gets too potent). I just leave the fruit in there all day, though my pitcher is such that none gets into the glass.
      Hope that helps!

      1. Do you change the ingredients every day or re-use the same for a couple of days before changing it?

        1. Victoria, I try to drink the entire pitcher in a day. I think the fruit/herbs will last a couple of days, though not much longer than that. 🙂

      2. Do you keep the brown apples in there and reuse? I have a 2 gallon pitcher i use and the apples are now brown and its not gone. Advice?

    2. hi, do you really need to leave the skin of the fruits in there? it tastes a little bitter (for the lemon and cucumber)

  10. Do you use hot or cold water on top of the fruit, cause i see the word Steep used and so was curious to the use of hot or cold, esp since it is being settled overnight anyways. thank you

  11. I love the apple cinnamon idea. I’m going to try that as soon as I get my hands on some cinnamon sticks! Here’s another detox/metabolism booster I’ve made a few times this past week:

I steep two green tea bags in about a quart of water, pour it over ice (it fills about 1/3 of my 2 quart pitcher), let it cool for a couple mins, then I add one orange thinly sliced, one apple thinly sliced (fuji is my favorite), and a handful of largely chopped strawberries. After combining the tea, ice, and fruit, if there’s any room leftover, I just top it off with water and let it sit overnight. Oranges and green tea are supposed to be a great metabolism booster and detox.

I just made some lavender tea and added oranges and strawberries tonight. I can’t wait to try it tomorrow! I think I would suggest that you drink any green tea mixture before evening hours because of the caffeine content, but two tea bags in a 2 quart pitcher isn’t TOO bad.

  12. Do you have to use mint leaves in the lemon and cucumber water? I have also heard of a water detox drink that has cayenne pepper in it, does anyone know what it is?

    1. I don’t think you have to put the mint in- just whatever your preference is. Also, I haven’t heard of the cayenne pepper, but hope you’ve found an answer about that. 🙂

    2. here is the receipe and the website for the one with the cayenne pepper.
      Lemonade cleanse
Lemon consists of ascorbic acid, assisting in the cleansing process. Known also as the staple beverage of Stanley Burroughs’ Master Cleanse, this detox drink is easy to make. Mix 2 tablespoons of freshly squeezed lemon juice, 2 tablespoons of pure maple syrup and one-tenth teaspoon of cayenne pepper in 8 ounces of purified water. Proponents of the Master Cleanse recommend you drink 6-8 glasses of this lemonade drink and eat nothing each day of your cleanse. Despite its popularity, nutritionists warn against the lack of essential nutrients in this drink.

  13. Wow, you use A LOT more fruit to h20 in your recipe in comparisons to most other recipes I have seen. For example the apple cinnamon recipe you have has 2.5 apples and 4 sticks for just a liter jar and most others I see are the same or less for apples and only 2 sticks for a whole gallon. So confused as to how much fruit to water ratio I should be doing. Most of your recipes are for small mason jars so basically one serving so really trying to figure out ratio for 64 oz serving sizes or more.

But I love the pictures and they are great idea starters.

    1. Hey Shanda- you can certainly dilute your waters more if you want and add 64 oz of water for the fruit/veggies/herbs suggested! 🙂 The recipes aren’t for small mason jars, but for the very large ones (a liter, like you said).
I prefer very ‘flavored’ water (I don’t really like plain water- wish I did!). If you just want a hint of flavor, try using less produce or more water. 🙂
      Hope that helps!

  14. i love all the recipes. i just want to know, can i keep the cucumbers in water (overnight) at room temp – i am always with a bad throat if i drink cold water.

    1. Hmmmmm, I don’t know. Perhaps leave them in the fridge overnight and then bring it out in the morning??? Or take the cucumbers out of the water, put them in the fridge for the night, and put them back in the water in the morning? The recipes don’t keep very well, only for a couple of days, really.
If you try it, will you let me know what you find out?

  15. I recently found the cucumber lemon mint detox water recipe on several websites and currently have my mixture steeping. Just curious if the detox water is suppose to be drank once a day or throughout the day for best results?

    1. 3 days? I try to drink it in the first day, or possibly over two days, but I think they start getting too potent after that. Hope that helps!

  16. I NEVER EVER EVER drink water (I know it’s bad!!). I couldn’t stand the bland taste of it. I only drank juice and sweetened tea. But I will say after trying these water recipes, I have drunk more water in the past couple months than I would in previous years (I told you I was anti-water for whatever reason)! These are great, and I feel so much healthier.

    1. Vanessa, I am just the same way- I NEVER drink plain water. The detox waters are life changing for that, right?

  17. All of you good ladies (and gents) wanting to detox with these waters, please please PLEASE only use CERTIFIED ORGANIC fruit, veggies and herbs. Otherwise, as someone else said, you’ll be giving yourselves a nice serving of toxic pesticide water. Not good for your health, and more work for your livers which you’re trying to detoxify and cleanse.

Pesticides and fungicides are seriously toxic (one of the reasons I believe for many of our current illnesses) and their use on crops continues to increase exponentially. This is because the critters and fungi quite quickly develop resistance to the sprays, so growers use more and more. If you can’t access certified organic produce, try growing your own organically, if possible.

    * We’re talking here about neurotoxins, endocrine and hormone disrupters, carcinogenic (cancer-triggering) agents and so on. Not a nice concoction.

  18. I have a question. in my detox water, I have Grapefruit peels, grapefruits, watermelon cubes with the rind, lemon slices with skin and all, orange slices with skin and all plus mint leaves.

I’m being a little obsessed with it, but please advise if my combination is acceptable.

    Thanks,
    Dawn

  19. I want to make strawberry and rosemary water but need to know how many strawberries do I use in a 32oz containers

  20. Is it bad to drink too much since it is a detox? Just curious before I drink 12 glasses of this a day! So good! Haha

  21. Hi,

once i prepare detox water, do i need to consume everything very next day or is it ok to keep it in refrigerator along with cucumber, lemons & mint for several days and consume it in 3-4 days (1 glass each day)

    Thanks,
    Kareem

  22. I have tried this just last night..cocumber , watermelon and mint leaves, the next morning I drink it but I find the taste like sour or something I don’t know..is it normal? I did not put mine in the fridge I just leave in a room temperature. Do I really need to put it on the fridge? Please I need your advice..I really want to continue drinking detox.thanks. godblee

    1. Hey Dara- yes, put it in the fridge! Otherwise, the produce ripens too much in the water and does give a sour taste!

  23. Do you have to use lemon or mint? I dont have any of those right now, i only have straw berries and cucumber, would that be okay?

    1. Emily, it is pricey! Using in season fruit makes it a little cheaper (and we always use herbs from our garden), but it is still a little expensive!
