build your own angry bird waffle bar- fruit syrup recipes

Who knew that building your own Angry Bird waffles could be so much fun? This little station was a huge hit with guests at the Angry Birds brunch (kids and grown ups alike).

Since many of you seem to be interested in recreating the syrups (and waffles), I thought I’d put all of the recipes in one place.

For the syrups-

INGREDIENTS

2 cups of fruit (we used strawberries, kiwi, pineapple and tangerines)

2 cups of water

1 cup of sugar

DIRECTIONS

Bring to a fruit, water and sugar boil. Let simmer 10 minutes.

While the mixture is simmering, mash the fruit to release the fruit flavors.

Put mixture in a food processor and mix.

Strain out seeds/chunks.

Serve in colored watering cans (or, as an alternative, a labeled oil/vinegar bottle).

For the fruit waffles, we used this belgian waffle recipe, but subbed out a quarter of the liquid for red, orange and green Naked Juice (for every 2 cups of milk, we added 1 1/2 cups of milk and 1/2 cup of juice). This gave the waffles a slightly fruity taste. Also, after noticing that the juice did very little to change the waffle color, I added a couple of drops of food coloring to each batch of waffle dough (you could definitely skip that step, though, and just make the fruity waffles).

Now I need to know- are you a pancake person or a waffle person (or something else entirely)? What’s your favorite brunch item?

  1. I am a waffle person. My favorite brunch item would be cornbread waffles topped with a few tater tots, bacon, a fried egg, and syrup. This breakfast is the reason I exercise. (As a side note, I saw a photo once of a woman who was running; it was captioned: Later, I will have pie.) Thanks for sharing your recipes!

    1. Haha- I am a waffle person as well! And I totally agree- exercise so we can eat what we want. ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Hey Katie- the watering cans are from Dollar Tree (funny, right?). I went in looking for oil/vinegar bottles for the syrups, but walked out with these instead. ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. Great idea. what did you use for eyes, eye brows and beaks? did you serve the whaffles warm? im in england so need to find alternatives.

    1. Hey Sam-
First, about the games- we had an egg hunt (the kids loved it). I’ve also seen all sorts of games where you launch a ball ‘bird’ at a stack of boxes.
Also, the eyes are marshmallows with little chocolate chips poked into them. The nose is an orange candy… you could use real orange slices/tangerines perhaps? And the eyebrows are licorice- though, you could also use a row of raisins?
      Hope that helps! ๐Ÿ™‚
