blue dress sew along- day 1

We’re so excited for our first Sew Along! Let’s get started!

Measure around your chest (under your arms) and the widest place on your hips (my chest measurement was the larger of the two, but I don’t have any hips, so yours might be the same or your hip measurement might be bigger). Choose the larger of the two measurements- from now on that number is referred to as YOUR WIDTH.

To determine your dimension, take YOUR WIDTH and add four inches. That number = YOUR FABRIC MEASUREMENT.

From your main fabric, cut out a rectangle that is 33″ tall and YOUR FABRIC MEASUREMENT wide.

From your lining fabric, cut out a rectangle that is 31″ tall and YOUR FABRIC MEASUREMENT wide.

Fold your main fabric rectangle in half width wise (preserve the 33″ and 31″ heights, cut the YOUR FABRIC MEASUREMENT side in half). Cut.*Keep your lining fabric rectangle as one piece.

See you back here tomorrow for more Sew Along goodness!

  1. That dress is so cute. I love this idea. Step by step instructions but not too much at one time. I can keep up with that!

  2. I'm just getting back from CO. (Felt NICE to be out of this Texas heat for a while.) Anyway, I'm behind a day and had a quick question. If I'm using a thick, dark knit fabric that's not transparent, is the lining necessary still? Thanks 🙂

  3. Hi Kirsten!

I’m so excited to start this project! I’m going out to buy my fabric tomorrow. I’m a novice at sewing but I want to make something I can actually wear. This is it! I’ll be in touch as I go along, if you don’t mind.

Thank you for thinking up this one-step-a-day tutorial. This is so doable!!!

    God bless you!

      1. Hi Kirstin! I finished it – all in 6 hours straight (well, with a dinner break in the middle)! The most difficult part for me, believe it or not, was Day 1: cut fabric to straight angle rectangles – hah hah! It was tough making sure they were straight. I can’t believe I actually made myself a dress. I’m washing it today so I can wear it to church tomorrow. I am soooo excited! I’ll take pictures when I’m all camera-ready. Right now, I’m looking for my next project. I’m addicted! Thank you so much for this tutorial. You’re the best!

        God bless and keep you!

  4. Hi,
I love this dress and I want to make it for a project i’m doing. I love the fabric because it’s quite fitting and not flared. I know it’s a stupid question but what fabric did you use?

    1. Not a stupid question at all (I often describe a fabric I love to my more-fabric-savvy friends to try to replicate the look/feel!). Anyhow, the fabric I used was chambray. 🙂 Hope that helps.
