Remember how I said I’d like to make Piper Jane a whole fleet of pieced jersey dresses? And then remember how “comfy summer clothes for Piper Jane” was on the To Make As I DeStash list?
Want to know why I wanted this dress to be all black, white and gray? So I could pair it with the fabulous, colorful accessories in Piper Jane’s drawers (I’d recommend this neutral route, by the way… this dress goes with everything!).
First I made a pieced jersey dress. Then, I added a pleated waistline (just pin pleats into a strip of jersey, pin into place on the dress and stitch in place)…
…and a pleated collar (using the same process) to this variation.
This variation screams “summer” to me with the happy prints (and the pops of yellow, red and blue).
I followed the pieced jersey tutorial, but minus the exposed seams (just sew with right sides together instead of wrong sides together)…
…and plus a jersey belt (ps- the leggings are made from the same jersey as the red tier so they coordinate exactly).
*The bottom layer of this dress was one of my old shirts (from Forever 21) that was jersey with lace along the bottom. I just left the bottom of the shirt intact and re-used it for the bottom of the dress.
I made this dress with six skinny layers (instead of four wider layers), basically in ROY G BIV order.
Then I added jersey rosettes across the waistline. They’re sewn really close together, giving it an extra ruffle-y look.
Paired with leggings (since it’s still a little chilly in the shade) and a coordinating headband, Piper Jane is the picture of cheerful Springtime!
Y’all might have to intervene before I turn all of Piper’s onesies into dresses– haha!

I wish I was crafty when my little Payton was born. She was born in summer and we livedin onsies! If I would have know how easy it is to transform them into dresses she would have looked much cuter! We'll be fixing up her wardrobe this summer. 🙂

I love the inspiration that your site provides. This "jersey" theme has REALLY gotten me so excited to sew and create. We all have old T-shirts lying around to use, and the thrift store is FULL of colorful T-shirts that are dirt cheap. My kids are so happy about these dresses and I didn't spend a fortune at the fabric store. Thank you for putting so many great ideas at my fingertips. I love your site for this reason!

I LOVE them! I wish my 6 year old was still that little, but I will definitely do the same with her shirts, as she doesn't wear onesies anymore! I do have one question, when you pinned the jersey strip, to create the pleats for the waistline & collar, in the first picture, did you turn the edges down or just cut them & leave them as-is? I sent you pictures a long while back of the onesie dress I made from your tute during my pregnancy. Well she is now 2 weeks old, and is wearing one of them! The other one I made never fit her – I used a NB size onesie, and well she was born at 9 lbs so we went straight into the 3m size onesie dress LOL
Here she is in her pieced jersey dress! The skirting was from old xsmall tank tops that I realized I wouldn’t be fitting back into for a while 😉
