kojotutorial: dress up your pom pom hat with a flower brooch

 

Ok, now on to the brooch tutorial.  Right here at the outset, I’d like to apologize for the quality of the pictures for this tutorial.  Like much of my crafting, these little gems were completed around midnight.  And then, silly me, I wrapped the hats up (with the brooches attached, of course) and gave them away without taking a single picture of them in natural light.  You’ll just have to trust me that they are absolutely darling.

With that off my chest, let’s get started!  If you’ve made a pom pom hat recently (or have another supercute hat lying around that would be even supercute-ER with a little flower-y brooch), these little add-ons are the perfect extra touch to give it some feminine flair.

To make a flower-y brooch hat accent, you’ll need:
-pieces of wool (about 20 half-dollar sized circles) for the petals
-circle of thick felted wool for the base
-hot glue
-brooch pin
-pinking shears (optional)

1.Using pinking shears, cut out 20 wool circles.  I just freehanded them (the pinking shear edging covers a multitude of imperfections), but you could make a template if you want.  Since I used two colors, I cut out 10 red circles and 10 ivory circles.  Also cut out a circle of thick felted wool for your base (a bit bigger than your other circles). In case you’re wondering, I made two hats and two brooches, so the picture shows about 40 wool circles and 2 felted wool bases.

2. Fold one of your circles into fourths.  With your hot glue gun, glue the pointy tip (the middle of the circle) onto the center your felted wool base.

4. Hot glue a brooch pin on the back on your base.  Pin this little lovely to your pom pom hat, wrap it up, and give it away to a sweet little girl (or, if you’re me, make two and give them to two sweet little girls that are sisters, and happen to be the daughters of your best friend!).
