homemade apple butter (with a free printable label!)

homemade apple butter (and a free printable!)

homemade apple butter
It’s hard to believe that it has been a whole year since I was traveling to Idaho in the fall (so gorgeous!) to visit our youngest sister and meet my niece, Adi. Northern Idaho is so beautiful in October- one of my favorite things we did while I was visiting (other than serious cuddle time with a newborn!) was go pick apples at an apple orchard. My sis knows me so well and knew I would love the fall activity, as well as the bounty of delicious fresh picked apples. That week we made apple fritters, apple pie, apple sauce, pork chops with glazed apples and, of course, apple butter. We made it in the crockpot and even though it takes a loooong time to cook, it makes the house smell amazing and requires very little “hands on” time.

Even though I didn’t have the fresh apples this year, the apples from the grocery store worked wonderfully, the simmering apple butter still made my house smell amazing, and now we have something delicious to eat on our morning toast.

Crockpot Apple Butter

Ingredients
10-12 medium apples
1 cup apple cider (or water)
1/3 cup white sugar
1/3 cup brown sugar
1 TBS vanilla extract
1/2 tbs ground cinnamon
1 tsp ground nutmeg
1/2 tsp ground cloves

Directions
Peel, core and chop apple into 1 inch slices. Put the apples in a crockpot and add the sugar and spices and stir to coat the apples. Pour water over the apples and cook on low overnight (6-8 hours) In the morning you will wake up to very soggy apples, in batches put them in a blender and blend until smooth (or blend in the crockpot with an emulsion blender) return the smooth puree to the crock pot and turn the heat to high with the lid cracked (or completely off), stir occasionally for another 3-4 hours until the apples have thickened and caramelized (there should be no standing liquid). A good test to see if it is finished is to run a rubber spatula through the mixture. If the mixture comes right back together, it’s not done. When the mixture holds and doesn’t reform for at least 10 seconds, it’s thick enough. Makes 3-4 cups

This recipe is a wonderful treat to share with friends since it makes several cups. It would even make a great Thanksgiving favor to send home with guests, so I made a page of labels for you to use as well. Just click on the links to print the apple butterlabels in gray or in red.

pumpkin pie ‘harvest popcorn’

harvest popcorn with yummy fall flavors!

Even though the weather here is still in the high 90’s, we try to make things feel as “fallish” as possible. We start burning fall candles, we decorate with fall leaves and pumpkins, we watch football, and we make this popcorn. A friend shared it with me a couple years ago and we make it […]

After I shared our Apple Sampler, several of you requested the Pumpkin Dip recipe. I had a little teeny bit left over, but I decided to take one for the team and whip up another batch. My family also decided to take one for the team and eat another batch (and wanted me to pass […]
