DIY sequined collar t-shirt (a j crew knock off)

DIY sparkle collar shirt (a J Crew knock off)

DIY sequin collar shirtFacebook and Instagram have been abuzz this week with Back to School pictures! While we aren’t quite there yet (Burke and Piper Jane’s preschool starts next week), I have been busy buying school supplies (true confession- mostly for me!) and readying wardrobes.

DIY jcrew knock off shirtBurke is pretty much set (thanks Alphabet Collection), so I have been focusing my efforts on making a few things for Pi. Her closet is pretty well stocked with basics (her legging collection is the stuff of dreams… or nightmares, depending on your perspective), so I am trying to make her a few dresses and special pieces as her ‘fall wardrobe.’

jcrew knock off shirtWhen I saw this sequin collar popover at JCrew, I knew Piper would love it. As luck would have it, she saw it on my computer screen and couldn’t contain herself.

DIY sequin collar shirtAfter sprinkles, the most tried and true way to Piper Jane’s heart? SPARKLES. Lots and lots of sparkles. Adam thinks this will make her quite the expensive catch someday, but I digress.

DIY glitter collar shirtSince a ninety eight dollar shirt isn’t in the back to school clothes budget, I began looking for a long sleeve shirt with mini pocket. I didn’t have to search long before finding a white one at Target.

DIY sequin collar shirtTo mimic the sparkle-y look of J Crew’s version, first I covered the pocket in sequins (I quickly abandoned the idea of keeping the layers separate so that the pocket would remain functional, but you could only attach the sequins to the outer pocket layer if you wanted). Then I added the outline of a collar with a fabric pen and sewed sequins to fill in the collar.

how to make a sequin collarLabor intensive? Absolutely. Worth it? 100% (I know I always say that about labor intensive projects, but if you have a little girl that loves glitter, this project will make her year).
