farmer’s market birthday party

Our Littlest Miss, Evie Kate, is turning two this month. Of course, a Happy Second Birthday Party was an order.

Evie’s very favorite thing is our local grocery store (in the middleeast), “Lulu’s.” And since birthday parties are the perfect chance to celebrate the affections of the teeniest guest of honor, ‘market party’ became our theme.

Since the party started at 11:00 am, and since our market had a ‘bakery,’ brunch foods made up most of the menu. We served scones, kolaches, blueberry muffins, mini cinnamon rolls and assorted baked goods.

There was also cereal in the market and milk in the milk box, which was a hit with the smaller guests. Peanut butter and huckleberry jam sandwiches from the ‘deli’ rounded out the breakfast fare.

We also had quite the produce section in “Evie’s Market,” so there was a high amount of fruit and vegetable munching as well. It was especially cute to watch Sayla and our nephew Easton and their fondness for the giant carrots!

ACTIVITIES

Grocery shopping was the main event at the market party. There was one ‘market’ section full of produce, a section for dried goods (like Pita Chips, chocolate dipped pretzels, Sunchips and mini cereal boxes), a small ‘flower market,’ and a little bakery.

The kids took turns as grocery checkers (complete with aprons) and shoppers (complete with money, carts, shopping baskets). Friends, the shopping was such a hit! The kids played in the market, restocked the shelves, and rebought the items for hours. Seriously, hours.

The flower market was also well loved; the kids made the grown ups bouquets of flowers from the flower market throughout the party. It was fabulous.

*The tutorial for making the felt mums is here. And here are the other tutorials we used for making the rest of the fabric flowers are here.

MARKET GOODIES

There were a couple of small cash registers, a mini cart (and two strollers that functioned as carts), green-baskets-turned-shopping-baskets, mini brown bags labeled “Evie’s Market,” actual produce bags with green twisty ties (we grabbed a few extras when we were buying all of the fruit and veggies for the party and then saved all of our bags as we set up the market), and even purses stocked with shopping money.

The real-market-items-remade were the kids’ favorite part of this party.

DECOR

To make the living room feel as ‘market-y’ as possible, we strung strands of cafe lights above the shopping areas. We also set up tiered tables layered with tons of baskets (you know, to give a stacked, farmer’s market-ish vibe). We also gathered as many mini chalkboards as we could find as produce labels to complete the market look.

Hilarious side note- we let the kids help us price the food the night before the party. It was a (really, really funny) adventure. You might notice that the ravioli is $4.99 a can, that the pretzels are all priced differently (for variations on the same item). And I don’t think we got a picture of this, but they priced the pineapple at $7.99 (it was $0.99 when I bought it). Funny kids!

There were scripty signs denoting “Evie’s Market,” “Flowers,” and “Bakery” (we loosely tried to copy the cursive from Lulu’s signage).

As always, the most important thing is whether the guest of honor loves the party. And, y’all, Evie had a blast. She loved shopping, she loved the chaos, and she loved being the center of attention. Happy TWO to my baby girl!

kung fu panda birthday party

panda birthday party

So this party happened in June. And we’re just getting the pictures up now. Better late than never, right? Have I mentioned that I love it when Jordan and I have the chance to throw parties together? Since there is this giant, pesky ocean between us, it doesn’t happen much. But when we are together, […]

bicycle birthday party (in aqua, red and pink)

bicycle themed birthday party

Both Burke and Piper Jane adore our friend from church, Miss Hazel (they tell me a hundred times a day, “Baby Hazel so cu-ute!”). And I love Hazel’s mama, Liz (of retro garden baby shower fame- she was the mama-to-be). So helping Liz put together Hazel’s bicycle birthday party was a super fun joint venture! […]

sayla’s puppy party

puppy party

As I said yesterday, Sayla requested a puppy for her birthday (I think Kead set her up to it), but we are not at a place in our lives to add a new family member so we opted for a puppy party instead. It was a fabulous success. I mean, little girls staring out the […]

hyatti: birthday girl

My middle daughter turned four this week. Four! For her birthday she wanted- a cake from the grocery store, “clunky” shoes, and a puppy. We definitely came through on two out of three and I think we made up for not getting her a puppy by throwing a puppy party, which I will share with […]

sprinkled with love birthday party

sprinkled with love party by kojodesigns

We laughed when Piper Jane asked for a “Sprinkle” themed birthday party. Her sweet tooth is renowned in these parts (second only to her mama’s), so a sprinkle party is perfectly suited for the Little Miss Priss’ second birthday celebration. Decked out in some sprinkle accessories- a sprinkle barrette and sprinkle corsage- the birthday girl […]

hyatti- let the celebrations begin!

Right now my house is a fun, crazy, party-planning head quarters. Over the next 6 weeks we have a party or shower every weekend. I love it! This weekend we had a little pinata party for our friend, Joey who turned 5 this month. My favorite parts of the party? The mini pinata favors: (we used […]

piper jane’s little play kitchen (with all of the extra’s)

pottery barn play kitchen redo

A few days before Piper’s birthday, we scored an awesome-but-needing-some-work Pottery Barn play kitchen on the cheap on Craigslist. We spent the next few evenings touching up paint, scraping off stickers, MagicEraser-ing and even replacing the plexiglass in the front of the oven (it wouldn’t clean up). Well, Adam did those things. I, on the other […]

an angry birds birthday party for burke

angry birds birthday party

You guys are probably better parents than we are- you probably don’t hand over your cell phone/iPod/iPad to bribe your Smooches with Angry Birds. But we do. And so Burke has deep love and great enthusiasm for Angry Birds Rio (and Letter School… and Cut the Rope… I could go on, but I won’t). Of […]
