A couple weeks ago, I got asked to participate in an afterschool program at the school Keadryn attends. A ton of ideas bounced around in my head and I finally landed on “Foundations of Art” (mostly so that I wasn’t narrowed down too much).  It has been a blast and so far we have done self-portraits, printing blocks, and color wheels. This week we are making “stained glass” windows! I am always on the hunt for new ideas that I can do with minimal materials for 1 hour art sessions with 1st and 2nd graders. Any fabulous ideas or resources you know of?

For this project we started with red, yellow and blue water and the girls had a blast figuring out all the colors they could make!

  1. One of my favorite projects can be a two day project (depending on humidity and how long it takes paper to dry.) Paint entire sheet of paper using multiple colors. Allow to dry completely. Completely color the painted sheet of paper with black crayon. Use a wooden skewer to to “drawer” a picture which in turns removes the black crayon revealing the color underneath. We did this by painting different colors horizontally and scratched out sunsets/sunrises. It was a blast and the kids loved it as well. Hope this helps!

    1. Thanks Peggy! I remember doing that project when I was in elementary and loving it! I had completely forgotten about it, and it is such a great project for this age. SO doing it next week.
